The aim of the course is to introduce students to the different ways in which the EU countries and the EU itself deal with the increasing diversity within European societies resulting from the legal and illegal migration flows, which have forced educators to face the challenge of how to address the presence of migrant students. That has led to increased activity at European level in the field of intercultural education in recent years. The course gives an in-depth knowledge of EU policies that are targeted at promoting intercultural education in Europe. The topics discussed include European Union institutions (such as European Commission, European Council, and Council of Ministers) and Council of Europe documents as well as the historical and contemporary European immigration policy developments that have had a direct impact on EU education. The discussion centers on the analysis of recent European level policies and directives aimed at fostering social cohesion by incorporating migrant students and the legitimacy of European policy initiatives in the field of intercultural education.
