HOW TO GIVE DIRECTIONS
INTRODUCTION
In Unit III we talked about how to receive English speaking visitors. After they have completed their business, they may ask you how to get to another office, to a lecture room, to the station, to the airport, etc. In other words, they may ask you the way, or for directions.
Giving directions is a tricky skill. It is easier to face-to-face situations if you can point the direction where your visitor wants to go. It is less easy in face-to-face situations, in which you cannot show the way, but in which you can use a map. It is fairly difficult in face-to-face situations, in which you cannot use a map, because you do not have one. It is more difficult over the phone, when you can use neither your hands nor a map.
Again, you will find that certain routines are stable across such situations.
