The course in Money, banking, and financial markets aims at introducing students to the topic of monetary analysis and monetary policy. The basic themes covered by the course include money, its importance in today's economy, the financial system and the monetary policy system, an overview of financial instruments. The seminary exercises allow for the practical application of the theoretical insights, as well as for mastering of the basic financial calculations. A separate emphasis is put on the theory and practice of banking and its regulation.
The course presumes knowledge about the aggregate models of the functioning of the economy, as these models are used to analyze the contemporary theories of money and monetary policy. An attempt is made to illustrate the theoretical points through the use of practical examples based on the experience and data from the Bulgarian economy over the last decades. At the same time, the course also aims at providing a global perspective to the financial processes.
Prerequisites: intro to micro- and macroeconomics; mathematics.
