Short description

In the last decades the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) has become widespread in the natural and social sciences. In the field of humanities, with respect to the ancient history, GIS offers a set of tools for data editing, visualisation and, most importantly, querying and analysing. All this facilitates the analysis and modelling of spatial phenomena such as settlement systems, relationships and communications between the settlements, roads and road systems, etc. The present course is focused on the application of GIS in Ancient Studies, with a special emphasis on Ancient Thrace. Several case studies from the history of ancient Thrace will be discussed in order to demonstrate the possibilities of GIS application for mapping, storing, visualization, but most of all - analysing the Antiquity. During to the course, students receive basic knowledge of GIS applications in ancient history and for GIS-based analysis of ancient sources, and how to aply it in their own research.
