Short description

In the last decades the use of Geographic Information System (GIS) has become wide spread in natural and social sciences. In the field of humanities, with respect to the ancient history, GIS offers a batch of tools for data editing, visualisation and, most importantly, querying and analysing. All of these facilitate the analysis and allow for modelling of spatial phenomena such as settlement systems, relationships and communications between the settlements, roads and road system, etc. The present course is focused on the application of GIS in ancient studies, with a special accent on ancient Thrace. Several case studies from the history of ancient Thrace will be discussed for demonstrating the possibilities of GIS application for mapping, storing, visualization, but most of all - analysing the Antiquity. During to the course, students receive basic knowledge of GIS applications in ancient history and for GIS-based analysis of ancient sources.
